Mauricio Pochettino does not condemn Tottenham’s woes to Wembley Stadium

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has insisted that Spurs’ 1-1 draw against Burnley has had nothing to do with their recent struggles at the Wembley Stadium.

The north London giants have won just one game at the national ground over the past year, and this has already led to suggestions that they could struggle to attain a top-four spot.

Spurs looked to have clinched their first glory in their temporary stadium for the campaign but a late equaliser from Burnley’s Chris Wood dampened the mood in the stadium. Following the game, Pochettino clarified that the defeat had to do more with their defending rather than their recent history at the stadium.

He said: “If some people are thinking about that, they need to stop. We have the responsibility to do better. And the way we conceded the goal today, I can tell you, the problem wasn’t Wembley.”

Spurs are already five points adrift of Manchester United in the early stage of the campaign, and it could potentially turn out to be a tough season with Harry Kane having gone through another August without a goal.

The England international has always managed to turn it around in the crunch period of the game, but the club are now playing under huge expectations following their runners-up finish to Chelsea last term.

The north London club have dominated all three games of the new league season, but they could consider themselves a tad unlucky to have not come up with a 100 percent record during the period. Pochettino has already brought in Davinson Sanchez and Paulo Gazzaniga to his ranks, and he expects another three to four players to arrive before the close of the summer transfer window.

The Argentine has placed a key focus on bolstering his backline this summer, and this puts the added pressure on the likes of Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli, who are certainties to start in most games due to the lack of sufficient competition with quality.
