Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has denied suggestions that Chairman Daniel Levy is restricting the club’s spending in the summer transfer window.
The north London club have yet to make a signing in the transfer market, but Pochettino insists that it has nothing to do with the construction of the new stadium.
Spurs’ previous managers Harry Redknapp and Andre Villas-Boas had stressed that they were not backed enough in the transfer market, but things have changed since then with the north London club regarded as genuine challengers for the Premier League title. ESPN FC claims Mauricio Pochettino had the chance to recruit the likes of Ricardo Pereira and Juan Foyth this summer, but he decided against the deals as they were too expensive.
Speaking prior to Spurs’ friendly against Juventus on Saturday, Pochettino stressed that the lack of spending is not being influenced by Levy, he said: “That is a very wrong perception. In three years, my experience with Daniel is that he’s always been trying to find a player to improve us.
I think Daniel is very keen for signings every season, in my experience. We have a lot of meetings, spontaneous meetings, talking every day on the training ground. I think we are all involved in the process. Of course, the last decision is between Daniel and me if we sign the player. But we are all involved in the process to try to find the right player for us.”
English champions Chelsea secured a deal for Alvaro Morata earlier last month but Pochettino insists that the striker could have joined the Premier League much earlier, had he agreed to become a squad player at Tottenham. Morata was offered a move to Spurs from Juventus back in 2015, but he was reluctant to play second fiddle to Harry Kane, who has bagged two Premier League Golden Boots.
