SHEARER TIPS KANE TO BEAT PREMIER LEAGUE GOAL RECORD

Alan Shearer has backed Tottenham striker, Harry Kane to challenge for his Premier League goal record if he can avoid injury during his career.

Kane has rose to prominence at White Hart Lane in recent years, emerging as the focal point of Tottenham’s attack after several loan spells away from his parent club.

The 23-year-old won the Premier League Golden Boot award last term and has also scored seven goals this term to take his overall tally to 56.

Such a figure is still significantly behind Shearer’s record of 260 but time is on Kane’s side as the England international could conceivably play at the top level for another decade. Shearer is adamant his countryman will be in with a chance to reach the milestone as long as he avoids a significant injury lay off.

“I thought Wayne Rooney would manage or would come near to making it,” Shearer is quoted as saying by FourFourTwo Greece.

“But he seems to be moving further away, and now plays a more retracted role at Manchester United.

“Harry Kane has made a stunning start to his career in the Premier League.

“If he avoids injury and continues his career here rather than trying his luck abroad, he will have the opportunity,” he added.

Shearer played for Southampton, Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United during an illustrious career before retiring in 2006. The 46-year-old believes the strikers of today have it easier than he did due to a drop in defensive standards in England’s top tier.

“I think the standard of defence in the Premier League is worse than when I was playing.

“Defending has become something of a forgotten art. It’s very different to the way they were facing us. So in fact it is easier to score,” Shearer insisted.

Kane is currently fifth favourite to win the Premier League Golden Boot this season. The Spurs striker is available at odds of 14/1.
